Gator UTV Models By John Deere
John Deere is truly the company that started it all in the UTV market. The introduction of the Gator in the early 1980s marked the beginning of the workhorse utility terrain vehicle, originally intended to haul loads that were much too large to carry for extended distances. The company was a natural pioneer for this type of vehicle, having built tractors since 1837! While not a major competitor in the sport UTV sector, John Deere continues to manufacture a line of 5 “crossover” models with different power plants and sizes with the addition of its new S-4 four seater.
The entry model Gator is the XUV 550, sporting a 570cc OHV gas motor rated at a very modest 16 horsepower. The vehicle tops out at 28 miles per hour, making it an excellent vehicle for younger riders. The 2 speed continuously variable transmission offers incredibly smooth shifting, and the operator station offers best in class ergonomics and comfortable high bucket seats, as well as a best in class sealed storage volume of 1.82 ft.³. There is also a large underground storage area, and the four-wheel independent suspension maximizes traction and vehicle control. With 10.3 inches of ground clearance and four-wheel-drive system with lever engagement, the vehicle’s controls emphasize simplicity. Safety has always been a priority with a company that specializes in building tractors, and the four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes with stainless steel rotors and sealed CVT drive case with high engine air intakes keep water out and prevent engine overheating.

The Gator XUV 550 S4 is John Deere’s first entry into the 4 seater market, and is priced lowest in its class at $9299. It utilizes the same 570cc engine as the XUV 550, and offers three-point seatbelts, and OSHA rollover protection certification. The S4 can also be fitted with over 75 John Deere attachments for incredible flexibility in a high demand work environment. The rear of the vehicle is fitted with a standard 2 inch hitch receiver, and a two inch front receiver with recovery loops is available as a dealer option.
With a slightly more powerful 617cc 28 hp engine, the XUV 625i features an EFI, liquid cooled twin cylinder to get the vehicle to 30 mph.The 625i features the largest cargo box in its class, with 16.4 ft.³ capacity, and 20 tie-down points as well as a pickup-style tailgate. The bed converts to a flatbed in minutes and can be ordered with an optional spray-in bed liner and power lift. As add-on equipment has always been a major priority with John Deere, the exclusive quick–clamp rail-based attachment system allows add-ons like gun–boots, tool boxes, sidewall extensions and many more. The double wishbone, independent long travel suspension provides excellent ride without squatting under heavy load. The 625i also features best in class 1000 pound cargo box capacity, 1500 pound towing and 1400 pound payload capacity. Recognizing the vast interests of UTV riders, this model is available in John Deere Green and Yellow, Olive and Black, or Realtree Hardwoods HD Camo. On-demand four-wheel drive for climbing and tough trails is available at the flip of a switch, and the full clutch enclosure provides greater access to water up to 22 inches high. The engine is constructed with heavy duty components like an aluminum head, cast iron block and painted interior and crank and thrust bearings. An optional speed limiter kit is also available to keep this gator moving at under 20 mph.
The Gator XUV 825i is the pride of the performance fleet with a liquid cooled, EFI 3 cylinder in-line DOHC engine capable of 50 hp. This model shares the same basic dimensions and payload as the 625I in a more powerful vehicle. The 75 amp alternator generates 1012 Watts of electricity intentionally designed to power extra accessories. The powerplant offers excellent low-end torque for towing, hauling and climbing hills, and the advanced clutch with tighter belt was designed to increase acceleration while maintaining excellent reliability. The fully independent dual A-Arm suspension with adjustable coils front and rear add to the rack and pinion steering to make possible a 12.4 foot turning radius. This model is also available with Electronic Power Assist Steering with advanced features like an anti-kick back mechanism, and torque sensor that measures general input so the onboard computer can provide the appropriate output. This model is also available in Green/Yellow, Olive/Black or Realtree Hardwoods HD Camo.
A rare option in the UTV market, John Deere has introduced the XUV 855D diesel powered two-seater with an 854cc liquid cooled diesel 3 cylinder engine rated at 23 hp. This model is built on the same frame and body as the 625i and 825i, but offers the reliability and fantastic gas mileage that only diesel can offer. The rear differential can be locked so that the rear wheels pushed together through tough spots. This model is available in the same 3 color options as the 625i and 825i and also can be ordered with the Electronic Power Assist Steering system.
Gator UTV Models By John Deere- conclusion
While these models certainly don’t emphasize performance the way the Polaris RZR, Kawasaki Teryx, or Can Am Commander do, John Deere’s approach to its equipment has always been strictly pragmatic. They make vehicles that get the job done, reliably, day in and day out.
John Deere is also unparalleled in terms of its factory equipment options. Offerings vary from lighting systems to bumpers to roofs and full cab enclosures. Snowplows and a wide variety of farm equipment and tool racks are also available for every model, maintaining the tradition of ultimate utility that the gator began more than 3 decades ago.
